How do I become an Axis Apprentice?
The journey to becoming an Axis Apprentice begins in Spring with the start of our recruitment campaigns. We consider the occupations and vacancies where we are looking to recruit and we consult our clients too.
Our vacancies are then advertised on our website and with our clients. Any applicants are invited to send in their CVs.
Our basic requirements are GCSE Maths and English, 4 and above at A to C grade. The cut-off date for our applications is May. We consider CVs for eligibility to match our criteria and then conduct initial telephone interviews. If successful, the next step is the completion of a work experience placement.
Those applicants who make it through this process will be invited for the Axis Apprentice Recruitment Day. These are face-to-face interviews. There is also a written test based around Maths, English and spatial awareness.
Placements for successful applicants usually begin around September when you will start your work at Axis, and also at the college and/or university we have chosen for you to attend.
All new recruits attend an induction day, where they can be introduced to the business as a whole and to our Health and Safety Team.
At our Apprentices Welcome Event, you will get to meet our Executive Team and Divisional Managers as well as your fellow Apprentices.
Regular Apprentice breakfast meetings ensure you are part of the family, keep you in touch with your colleagues and Managers and ensure you are at the top of your game receiving the best support and help

When applying to be an Axis subcontractor or supplier, who sees my data and how is it being used?
Your company’s details will be available to Axis staff who are given permission to use the supply chain portal to complete their jobs. Before your company has been approved, your details will be reviewed by relevant internal departments e.g. Finance, Health and Safety, Sustainability etc. to ensure the correct information has been supplied.
Once approved, Axis Contract Managers will use the directory to search for companies to deliver work specific to the job’s requirements. Skills and experience
Since 1986, we have repaired and maintained properties and buildings across multiple sectors. Our experts offer a wide range of services including responsive repairs and major refurbishments, putting residents and occupants at the heart of our work.
A safe pair of hands
Axis was founded in 1986 by two brothers who started out together as apprentice bricklayers. They built the company up to be a highly profitable national success with multi-million turnover and over 1,000 employees. But at the heart of the business, our values have always shaped the way we work, whether that’s with our clients, our employees or the communities we serve. We are known in the business as a safe pair of hands.
Flexible and Forward Thinking
Our clients like us for our expertise, adaptability and proactive mindset. We are constantly seeking and embracing new ways and new technologies to improve our skills and the services we offer. We will transfer skill-sets or services – for example, cladding in social housing – into another service, like NHS facilities, improving the safety of all residents and occupants. A Planned Maintenance Programme, can easily incorporate our Responsive Repairs service, should our client so wish.
We work to suit our clients
We work closely with our clients and their own timetables, adjusting our own to suit theirs. A busy hotel cannot have too many rooms undergoing refurbishment at the same time – so we will stage our works. A social housing landlord must have a demonstrably fast voids turnaround, and our schedules recognise this urgency. Our projects for the MOD take into account the fact that service families move regularly and need high standards of accommodation.
Data Driven for Improvement
Closely monitoring project progress, performance, and compliance, we provide regular transparent feedback and reports, adjusting where necessary. Our analytical approach ensures the reliability, professionalism and smooth delivery of every maintenance or fit-out project.
Comprehensive Service
We pride ourselves for seeing our project through from start to completion and beyond. Our planning and design processes combines clear communication, creative problem-solving, and a thorough understanding of building compliance and legal requirements. Our installations are conducted by industry experts, and our follow up maintenance and reporting systems are thorough and transparent.
A Responsible Business
Axis believes firmly in adding social value to the communities where we work. We aim also to reduce our own environmental impact and, by integrating sustainability into our work, through our decarbonisation programmes for example, we proactively help our clients to minimise their carbon footprint and to achieve their government Net Zero targets.

All product manufacture is covered by third party accreditations; FIRAS, BM Trada, IFC. All installers are third party accredited to either FIRAS, BM Trada or IFC.
What are active fire stopping solutions?
Active fire solutions act to either detect, extinguish or aid in escaping a fire. Manual or automatic activation systems include AFD (Automated Fire Detection), AOV (Automatic Opening Vents), emergency lighting, fire detection systems, smoke alarms, sprinkler systems and wayfinding signage.
What are passive fire stopping solutions?
Passive fire solutions help contain the fire by delaying the spread of fire and smoke. They include installation of cavity barriers, fire batts, pillows, sleeves, curtains, collars and wraps, firestops and penetration seals and Firetherm Intudeck systems in lofts.
Do active and passive fire stopping solutions work together?
Yes. Both active and passive fire protection solutions play important and complementary roles as part of a building’s fire strategy.
What is compartmentation in fire safety?
Compartmentation simply divides a building into ‘compartments’ to effectively contain and suppress fire. Each compartment is then reinforced with fire-resistant materials and through the installation of protective measures such as fire doors or cavity barriers.
How do sprinklers work?
Sprinklers react to heat. If fitted, they will spray water across a room that has reached 60-70 degrees.
The London Fire Brigade recommends their use in schools, care homes where are mobility may be an issue, residential properties over 11m and hotels, B&Bs and hostels.
Who conducts Axis’ fire stopping works?

Retrofitting involves assessing the building’s fire risks, identifying deficient areas, and implementing appropriate fire-stopping measures to enhance the overall fire protection of the structure.
What is planned maintenance?
Planned maintenance is a proactive planned approach to property maintenance which anticipates issues and potential breakdowns, and schedules repairs before such failures occur. Planned maintenance programmes reduce emergencies and breakdown which may require a responsive repairs programme.
What is Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM)?
Planned Preventative Maintenance programmes include regular ongoing checks and repairs, ensuring systems stay functional and safe. They take into account occupant lifestyles and wear and tear.
What is fabric maintenance?
Fabric maintenance covers all aspects of property maintenance apart from Mechanical & Electrical maintenance services.
It includes building assets such as roofing, external walls, windows, doors, cladding and insulation.
What are cyclical repairs?
Old and outdated assets and equipment are far more likely to fail than newer equipment. By replacing or repairing equipment before it reaches end-of-life or breakdown, property landlords and owners can help occupants to avoid disruption through sudden, unexpected failures. A cyclical repairs programme reduces costs associated with asset and equipment breakdowns.
Can you run cyclical repairs and planned maintenance programmes at the same time?
Indeed you can! Cyclical repairs and planned maintenance programmes often run in parallel.Planned maintenance monitors the wear and tear of assets on a scheduled basis to proactively avoid future outages and keep facilities in good working condition.
Planned maintenance can occur on a weekly, monthly, or annual basis. It may involve regular cleaning, checking of parts and fixing or replacing components that are becoming worn.
Cyclical repairs involve repairing or replacing assets on a set schedule as they reach end-of-life. A cyclical repair timetable will depend entirely on the individual shelf life of each asset. This could range from one to 25 years.
What types of planned maintenance works does Axis do?
We offer a comprehensive list of internal and external planned maintenance works. These include:
How do planned maintenance programmes help landlords and owners?
Scheduling works and anticipating the purchase of supplies well in advance improves timeframes, budget planning and targets. Planned maintenance programmes catch issues early, reducing expensive emergency or responsive repairs costs. They are shown to increase resident satisfaction too.
How do planned maintenance programmes help residents?
Axis’ feedback indicates that our residents value our proactive approach to repairs and maintenance in their homes.
Advance scheduling and allocated teams – and the advance communication this allows – reduce disruption and inconvenience to residents.
How does Axis provide information for a planned maintenance programme?
We conduct thorough surveys to assess building conditions and prioritise the order of repairs.
Our full reports itemise the property’s structural, mechanical, and electrical needs, providing a strategy for repairs and upgrades, extending asset lifespans and guiding future maintenance decisions. Plus, our efficiency reports highlight energy-saving opportunities.
We’ll consider the use of the building and its assets, assess how this impacts long and short-term wear and tear before adding a priority level to each project on the maintenance plan.
How does planned maintenance work alongside reactive or responsive repairs?
Planned maintenance helps to extend the life expectancy of assets, thus reducing the need for frequent replacement or repair (responsive repairs).
Clients whose properties are well-maintained through a planned maintenance programme experience less sporadic downtime than those who do not have assets regularly maintained.
Clearly, this is a far more cost-effective approach in the long term. Well-maintained assets and equipment will also run more efficiently and sustainably, and the chance of breakdown is significantly less.
Axis will work to ensure the smooth running of both planned maintenance programmes and reactive maintenance programmes.
What are capital improvements?
Properties undergoing capital improvements are adapted or enhanced structurally to improve a building and its assets, adding value to the property. Generally, these projects occur less frequently than repair and maintenance work, which is often ongoing. Capital improvements are planned in advance and may take place over several years as part of a long-term development project.
What types of refurbishment works does Axis conduct?
Axis’ comprehensive refurbishment works cover all settings including commercial, industrial and housing. Services include:
What does ‘refurbishment’ mean in the property maintenance business?
Refurbishment works include updating décor, painting and decorating (inside and outside), and re-plastering. It can also include some repairs, cleaning, re-equipping (installing new kitchens and bathrooms, for example), reconfiguring space and landscaping garden space as well as re-flooring.
Refurbishment works are often conducted as part of planned maintenance or asset management programmes.
What are the benefits of property refurbishment to landlords?
Refurbishment increases property value and longevity and boosts energy efficiency. Refurbishment providers modernise fixtures, improve living spaces, and address wear and tear, preventing costly repairs and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Landlords also see an increase in resident satisfaction as a result of refurbishment work.
What are the benefits of property refurbishment to residents?
Refurbishment works offer residents modernised kitchens, bathrooms, quality flooring, and better insulation. These improvements reduce living costs and ensure properties are safe and compliant with regulations, enhancing comfort and peace of mind for residents.
What’s the difference between “refurbishment” and “renovation” to a property?
Both terms, “refurbishment” and “renovation”, refer to the process of improving or updating a building, but they have slightly different meanings:
What are responsive repairs?
Responsive repairs comprise routine and everyday repairs, as well as emergency and urgent repairs. Responsive repairs resolve and restore defective assets back to full working condition. This could involve fixing the asset or replacing it entirely. This type of repair work occurs on an ad-hoc basis and is not included within a planned or cyclical maintenance programme. As the name suggests, responsive repairs occur in direct response to a reported breakdown. They quickly rectify issues as they occur. The reports, or requests for a repair may come from the landlord, the owner or the tenant/resident.
What’s the difference between urgent, routine and emergency repairs?
Responsive repairs range from routine fixes to urgent or emergency issues, restoring assets to full working condition. Emergency issues include burst pipes, faulty boilers, loss of heat, water or electricity supply. Urgent issues might include issues like the presence of damp or mould which are injurious to health if left untreated. Routine issues include things like broken windows or taps. Axis’ in-house Call Centre employees assess and prioritize repairs, with emergency teams available 24/7.

Axis’ fast and responsive automated booking system is ready to handle clients’ enquiries and arrange reactive repairs. We’ll always aim for a first-time fix. Axis’ long-standing and trusted supply chain is on board to ensure that we have access to quality material needed to complete repair work. We keep residents informed about the progress of their reported repair.
Why are responsive repairs important?
Whilst planned and cyclical maintenance programmes work to reduce the likelihood of sudden asset and facility faults, it’s only natural that these assets may unexpectedly run into a fault from time to time. However, sudden issues can cause inconvenience and disruption to residents and compromise the overall standard of living.
Responsive repairs have one of the greatest impacts on residents’ quality of life. Axis values the importance of providing residents with a high level of customer care and satisfaction. Our responsive repair services are important for ensuring that residents can experience well-conditioned, fully- functional and above all, safe and comfortable living spaces. If issues go unactioned or unreported, the quality of homes or living spaces is affected and in the long term, the general condition of the property can become compromised. Responsive repairs are not only important for maintaining residents’ standard of living but also work to protect the value and condition of the property and its assets for the future.
As a resident, how do I book a responsive repair?
Resident care is at the heart of all our work. Throughout the repair process all our employees will be courteous and treat you with respect. You can phone Axis’ UK-based, in-house trained Call Handlers, available 24/7 on a dedicated number which you will receive from your landlord or housing provider. In some cases where available, you can book online using our automated booking service and chatbot.
After our team has assessed the issue, a skilled operative is assigned to fix the problem, with full appointment tracking and communication to keep you posted about their arrival time.
What are voids repairs?
Empty social housing properties are referred to as voids. Voids repairs occur in between tenancies to repair and refurbish an empty property before it is re-let. The main purpose of void repairs is to bring the vacant property back to a lettable condition as quickly as possible.
This ensures that new tenants can move into a fresh, safe and comfortable environment – vital in enhancing resident satisfaction levels. Landlords often have a waiting list for their properties. Axis carries out voids repairs and refurbishments with maximum efficiency to reduce the turnaround time on empty properties. Additionally, by staying on top of issues that could become long-term problems, landlords can reduce repair costs in the future.
What does Axis’ voids repair service include?
Axis’ property surveyors will identify any faults, damage and necessary maintenance requirements, checking that gas and electric systems are safe and in good condition, kitchen and bathroom facilities are fully functional and clean, and that the property is secure and free of infestation and damp and mould. We’ll put together a list of work that is required to bring the property back to a minimum lettable standard. Any damage or faults will be added to the list. Axis works alongside the landlords to complete any repair work within the scheduled time frame so that turnaround time is not delayed. Our schedulers will liaise with operatives and send the right teams or skilled individuals out to complete the job. This could include plumbing, gas, electrical and boiler work as well as window repairs, door or lock replacement. Once work is complete, we’ll provide photographic inventory and condition reporting.

What is the importance of a hotel refurbishment to the owner?
A newly refurbished hotel creates a welcoming, functional environment for guests that is modernised and compliant with safety standards. This improves occupancy rates and therefore revenue by attracting new guests. Past guests are more likely to return to a well-refurbished destination. Positive reviews and the all-important word of mouth PR enhance brand reputation and keep customers coming!
What is the importance of a hotel or leisure centre refurbishment for guests?
From the moment they arrive in the welcoming reception area, or take a drink at the bar, guests benefit from modernised amenities, better safety features, and an overall enhanced experience. Exterior refurbishment works to a hotel or leisure centre including landscaping create a great first impression for guests too.
How does Axis ensure minimal disruption during hotel refurbishment and leisure centre refurbishment programmes?
We know that guests or visitors to a hotel or leisure space don’t want to be disturbed by drilling when they are eating their dinner or exercising. Or have to tiptoe round ladders or scaffold while they stroll through the grounds!
So, we often undertake our refurbishment works at night or during off-peak hours to minimise impact on guests and staff. Or we might offer a staged programme, working floor by floor for example.
We understand that owners want to get paying guests and visitors back into their facility, and we won’t compromise on quality to make this happen for them.
What is a Heritage Listed Building?
A heritage listed building is one officially recognised as being of national significance in the UK due to its architectural or historic value. The national list is maintained by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).
While people often associate listed buildings with castles or grand country houses, the list also includes a wide variety of structures such as mills, garden walls, old factories and bridges etc.
What does heritage building conservation mean?
Heritage building conservation refers to the careful preservation, protection, refurbishing, restoring and repair of historic buildings to maintain their original character, materials, and significance. It involves using traditional techniques and appropriate materials to ensure the building’s historical and architectural value is retained for the future generations as well as making it suitable for modern use.
What is the difference between Grade I, II* and II?
The grading system for heritage listed buildings in the UK reflects their level of national architectural, or historic importance:
Grade I buildings are of exceptional interest, sometimes considered internationally important. Only around 2.5% of listed buildings fall into this category. For example, Blackpool Tower. Grade II* buildings are particularly important and of more than special interest. These make up about 5.5% of listed buildings. For example, Battersea Power Station. Grade II listed buildings are of special interest, warranting every effort to preserve them. This is the most common grade, covering around 92% of all listed buildings. Examples include theatres, public houses and stadiums.

What techniques and treatments are used in heritage building conservation?
In heritage building conservation projects, Axis combines traditional craftsmanship with modern best practices to protect and restore historic structures and buildings. Our teams use time-honoured techniques such as gold leafing, stone masonry and leadwork, alongside specialist treatments tailored to each building. These include careful cleaning, timber, and stone restoration, and the use of period-appropriate materials, finishes, and bespoke paint colours to accurately match the building’s original appearance and to preserve its historic character.
What does heritage modernisation entail, and how does Axis approach modernising family homes?
Heritage modernisation often involves Victorian properties, which was prevalent across most of our UK cities. These buildings are in high demand, especially among social housing landlords facing long waiting lists.
Modernising a Victorian property requires a careful balance between preserving its historic character and introducing practical, modern functionality. This typically includes reconfiguring internal layouts to create family-friendly living spaces and installing contemporary amenities such as updated kitchens and bathrooms.
Energy efficiency and decarbonisation are central to our Victorian property modernisation projects. As decarbonisation specialists, Axis delivers tailored energy efficiency solutions that reduce carbon emissions while preserving the building’s historic character. Our decarbonisation services support clients in meeting net zero goals, future proofing heritage properties without compromising their original aesthetic.
At Axis, we manage Victorian property renovations with sensitivity and expertise delivering homes that respect their heritage while fulfilling the needs of today’s families.
What challenges do heritage property service providers face?
Heritage properties often remain in active use such as offices, shops, restaurants or family homes while heritage property restoration or maintenance is underway. This means leading providers must carefully plan and phase their work to minimise disruption and work around the occupants’ daily routines.
Balancing modernisation with preservation is another key challenge. Our heritage experts ensure that buildings remain practical and functional for today’s use without compromising the historic and architectural character of the building.
Additionally, our specialist treatments such as gentle cleaning and careful removal of plant matter are often required to protect the building.
Sourcing authentic, period-appropriate materials such as paint, stone and tiles are essential to maintaining the building’s original appearance and historic integrity.
